SERMON TITLE: Set Apart

TEACHER: Dr. Assad Saif

PASSAGE: Psalm 4

The Problem: (We believe that) God forgets about us.

Has this thought every occurred to you?
The thought that maybe… God has moved right past you
and onto someone else that is more important or
maybe some other task that is a higher priority?

There are times in our journey in life where
something happens that is traumatic or painful
and the devil will use these moments to sneak in
and plant seeds of deceit or lies.

Psalm 4:1 (NIV)

¹ Answer me when I call to you,
my righteous God.
Give me relief from my distress;
have mercy on me and hear my prayer

Main Point: God values the humble. (v. 1)

Psalm 4:2-3 (NIV)

² How long will you people turn my glory into shame?
How long will you love delusions and seek false gods?
³ Know that the Lord has set apart his faithful servant for himself;
the Lord hears when I call to him.

Observation 1: He hears the faithful. (vv. 2-3)

⁴ Tremble and do not sin;
when you are on your beds,
search your hearts and be silent.
⁵ Offer the sacrifices of the righteous
and trust in the Lord.

Observation 2: Righteousness is inward and outward. (vv. 4-5)

Luke 6:45 (NIV)

⁴⁵ A good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart, and an evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in his heart. For the mouth speaks what the heart is full of.

Where is my heart when it comes to sacrificing for the Lord?” Do you have a true motive?

Psalm 4:6-7 (NIV)

⁶ Many, Lord, are asking, “Who will bring us prosperity?”
Let the light of your face shine on us.
⁷ Fill my heart with joy
when their grain and new wine abound.

Observation 3: He gives joy. (vv. 6-7)

The Bible doesn’t say that God will make you happy, that isn’t the teaching. The teaching here is that God will give you joy.

Question:

Will we turn to the Lord in our times of need? Or will we turn to the things we think we know will work in our favor.

⁸ In peace I will lie down and sleep,
for you alone, Lord,
make me dwell in safety.

The Challenge: Find security in the Lord. (v. 8)

Shalom is peace, it is well-being, it is safety and security, it is what it means to be protected and provided for by God.
