SONG TITLE: ANOTHER IN THE FIRE
Verse 1
There’s a grace when the heart is under fire
Another way when the walls are closing in
And when I look at the space between
Where I used to be and this reckoning
I know I will never be alone
Chorus 1
There was another in the fire
Standing next to me
There was another in the waters
Holding back the seas
And should I ever need reminding
Of how I’ve been set free
There is a cross that bears the burden
Where another died for me
There is another in the fire
Verse 2
All my debt left for dead beneath the waters
I’m no longer a slave to my sin anymore
And should I fall in the space between
What remains of me and this reckoning
Either way I won’t bow to the things of this world
And I know I will never be alone
Chorus 2
There is another in the fire
Standing next to me
There is another in the waters
Holding back the seas
And should I ever need reminding
What power set me free
There is a grave that holds no body
And now that power lives in me
Tag
There is another in the fire oh
Bridge
And I can see the light in the darkness
As the darkness bows to Him
I can hear the roar in the heavens
As the space between wears thin
I can feel the ground shake beneath us
As the prison walls cave in
Nothing stands between us
Nothing stands between (us)
Verse 3
There is no other name
But the Name that is Jesus
He who was and still is
And will be through it all
So come what may in the space between
All the things unseen and this reckoning
I know I will never be alone
I know I will never be alone
Chorus 3
There’ll be another in the fire
Standing next to me
There’ll be another in the waters
Holding back the seas
And should I ever need reminding
How good You’ve been to me
I’ll count the joy come ev’ry battle
‘Cause I know that’s where You’ll be

SONG TITLE: BATTLE BELONGS
Verse 1
When all I see is the battle
You see my victory
When all I see is a mountain
You see a mountain moved
And as I walk through the shadow
Your love surrounds me
There’s nothing to fear now
For I am safe with You
Chorus
So when I fight I’ll fight on my knees
With my hands lifted high
O God the battle belongs to You
And every fear I lay at Your feet
I’ll sing through the night
O God the battle belongs to You
Verse 2
And if You are for me
Who can be against me
For Jesus there’s nothing
Impossible for You
When all I see are the ashes
You see the beauty
When all I see is a cross
God You see the empty tomb
Bridge 1
(An) Almighty Fortress You go before us
Nothing can stand against
The power of our God
You shine in the shadows
You win every battle
Nothing can stand against
The power of our God

SERMON NOTES with SCRIPTURE
SERMON TITLE: Enduring While Suffering
TEACHER: Dennis Keating
PASSAGE: 1 Peter 2:11-3:7
The Big Question: How is a Christ-follower to respond when unfairly suffering?
__________
Main Point: Follow Jesus’ example of patient endurance.
__________
1 Peter 2:20a (NASB)
20a For what credit is there if, when you sin and are harshly treated (“receive a beating”-NIV), you endure it with patience?
1 Peter 2:20b (NASB)
20b But if when you do what is right and suffer for it you patiently endure it, this finds favor with God.
Observation 1: Patiently Endure. (v. 20)
__________
1 Peter 2:21a (NASB)
21a For you have been called for this purpose,…
1 Peter 2:21 (NASB)
21 For you have been called for this purpose, since Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example for you to follow in His steps,
1 Peter 2:22 (NASB)
22 WHO COMMITTED NO SIN, NOR WAS ANY DECEIT FOUND IN HIS MOUTH;
1 Peter 2:23a (NASB)
23a and while being reviled, He did not revile in return;…
1 Peter 2:23 (NASB)
23 and while being reviled, He did not revile in return; while suffering, He uttered no threats, but kept entrusting Himself to Him who judges righteously;
Luke 23:34 (NASB)
34 Father, forgive them; for they do not know what they are doing.
1 Peter 2:23 (NASB)
23 and while being reviled, He did not revile in return; while suffering, He uttered no threats, but kept entrusting Himself to Him who judges righteously.
1 Peter 2:24 (NASB)
24 and He Himself bore our sins in His body on the cross, so that we might die to sin and live to righteousness; for by His wounds you were healed.
1 Peter 2:21 (NASB)
21 For you have been called for this purpose, since Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example for you to follow in His steps;
Translation:
hupogrammos = example or an underwriting
Jesus is the pattern we’re to “trace” or copy perfectly while we suffer unjustly.
__________
Three different relationships in which we are to demonstrate patient endurance while suffering:
1) Among the unsaved: “I urge you as aliens and strangers to abstain from fleshly lusts which wage war against the soul.”
(1 Peter 2:11)
Translation:
apecho = abstain or “hold yourself away from”
1 Peter 2:12 (NASB)
12 Keep your behavior excellent among the Gentiles so that in the thing in which they slander {“accuse” – NIV} you as evildoers, they may because of your good deeds, as they observe them, glorify God in the day of visitation.
How should a follower of Jesus respond to those kinds of accusations?
Do lots of “good deeds” towards those slandering us.
2) Under human institutions: “Submit yourselves for the Lord’s sake to every human institution;”
(1 Peter 2:13)
Following Jesus means live(ing) submissively under man-made lines of authority.
Human government: “whether to a king as the one in authority, 14 or to governors as sent by him for the punishment of evildoers and the praise of those who do right.”
(1 Peter 2:13-14)
Believers are commanded to willingly obey the laws of civil authority. The only exception (except) is when they command us to sin.”
1 Peter 3:1 (NASB)
1 Every person is to be in subjection to the governing authorities.
1 Peter 2:15 (NASB)
15 For such is the will of God that by doing right you may silence the ignorance of foolish men.
1 Peter 2:15 (NASB)
15 For such is the will of God that by doing right you may silence the ignorance of foolish men.
1 Peter 2:17 (NASB)
17 Honor all people, love the brotherhood, fear God, honor the king.
Secular employment: “Servants, be submissive to your masters with all respect,”
(1 Peter 2:18a)
1 Peter 2:18 (NASB)
18 Servants, be submissive to your masters with all respect, not only to those who are good and gentle, but also to those who are unreasonable.
Am I to let my boss abuse me without saying anything?
1 Peter 2:19 (NASB)
19 For this finds favor, if for the sake of conscience toward God a person bears up under sorrows when suffering unjustly.
3) Difficult marriages: “In the same way, you wives, be submissive to your own husbands;”
(1 Peter 3:1a)
Don’t read “Submissive” as
– “passive”
– “weak”
– “easily abused”
– “non-communicative”
– “without boundaries.
Colossians 3:18 (NASB)
18 Wives, be subject to your husbands as is fitting in the Lord.
1 Peter 3:7a (NASB)
7a You husbands in the same way…
Husbands are called to submit to The Lord!
1 Corinthians 11:3a (NASB)
3a Christ is the head of every man…
1 Peter 3:1 (NASB)
1 In the same way, you wives, be submissive to your own husbands so that even if any of them are disobedient to the word, they may be won without a word by the behavior of their wives.
1 Peter 3:7 (NASB)
7 You husbands in the same way, live with your wives in an understanding way, as with someone weaker, since she is a woman; and show her honor as a fellow heir of the grace of life, so that your prayers will not be hindered.
__________
The Challenge: Submission is not easy, but we are to follow Jesus’ example!

SONG TITLE: YES I WILL
Verse 1

In the waiting
The same God who’s never late
Is working all things out
You’re working all things out

Yes I will lift You high
In the lowest valley

SONG TITLE: LIVING HOPE
Verse 1
How great the chasm
that lay between us
How high the mountain
I could not climb
In desperation
I turned to heaven
And spoke Your name
into the night
Then through the darkness
Your loving-kindness
Tore through the shadows
of my soul
The work is finished
the end is written
Jesus Christ
my living hope
Pre-Chorus
‘Cause there’s no prison wall
You can’t break through
No mountain You can’t move
All things are possible
There’s no broken body You can’t raise
No soul that You can’t save
All things are possible
(things are possible)
Verse 2
Who could imagine
so great a mercy
What heart could fathom
such boundless grace
The God of ages
stepped down from glory
To wear my sin
and bear my shame
The cross has spoken
I am forgiven
The King of kings
calls me His own
Beautiful Savior
I’m Yours forever
Jesus Christ
my living hope
Chorus
Hallelujah
praise the One who set me free
Hallelujah
death has lost its grip on me
You have broken every chain
There’s salvation in Your name
Jesus Christ
my living hope
Verse 3
Then came the morning
that sealed the promise
Your buried body
began to breathe
Out of the silence
the Roaring Lion
Declared the grave
has no claim on me
(REPEAT)
Jesus Yours
is the victory
(whoa)
Ending
Jesus Christ my living hope
Oh God You are my living hope
