SONG TITLE: THIS IS AMAZING GRACE

Verse 1
Who breaks the power
of sin and darkness
Whose love is mighty
and so much stronger
The King of Glory
the King above all kings

Verse 2
Who shakes the whole earth
with holy thunder
And leaves us breathless
in awe and wonder
The King of Glory
the King above all kings

Chorus
(Yeah) (Oh) This is amazing grace
This is unfailing love
That You would take my place
That You would bear my cross
You laid down Your life
That I would be set free
Oh Jesus I sing
for all that You’ve done for me

Verse 3
Who brings our chaos
back into order
Who makes the orphan
a son and daughter
The King of Glory
the King of Glory

Verse 4
Who rules the nations
with truth and justice
Shines like the sun in
all of its brilliance
The King of Glory
the King above all kings

Bridge
Worthy is the Lamb who was slain
Worthy is the King who conquered the grave
Worthy is the Lamb who was slain
Worthy is the King who conquered the grave
Worthy is the Lamb who was slain
Worthy is the King who conquered the grave
Worthy is the Lamb who was slain
Worthy worthy worthy

SONG TITLE: GOOD GOOD FATHER

Verse 1

I’ve heard a thousand stories
Of what they think You’re like
But I’ve heard the tender whisper
Of love in the dead of night
You tell me that You’re pleased
And that I’m never alone

Chorus

You’re a Good Good Father
It’s who You are
It’s who You are
It’s who You are
And I’m loved by You
It’s who I am
It’s who I am
It’s who I am

Verse 2

I’ve seen many searching for answers
Far and wide
But I know we’re all searching for answers
Only You provide
Because You know just what we need
Before we say a word

Bridge 1
You are perfect in all of Your ways
You are perfect in all of Your ways
You are perfect in all of Your ways to us

Verse 3
Love so undeniable I can hardly speak
Peace so unexplainable I can hardly think
As You call me deeper still
As You call me deeper still
As You call me deeper still
Into love love love

SERMON NOTES with SCRIPTURE

SERMON TITLE: The Blessing of Suffering

TEACHER: Dennis Keating

PASSAGE: 1 Peter 3:8-22

Job 1:1 (NASB)

1 There was a man in the land of Uz whose name was Job; and that man was blameless, upright, fearing God and turning away from evil.

When good people go through devastating loss and unspeakable pain, we wonder, “What purpose could God have for that?”

__________

Submission: Willingly placing ourselves under the authority of another person.
i.e: Governing Authorities (2:13); in the Workplace (2:18); and in their Homes. (3:1-7)

__________

Main Point: Respond RIGHTLY to unjust suffering and God’s BLESSING will ultimately come from it.

1 Peter 3:14 (NASB)

14 But even if you should suffer for the sake of righteousness, you are blessed.

Translation:

makarios = Blessed as in an inner sense of honor or “privilege” that comes from “suffering for doing what is right.

Philippians 1:29 (NASB)

29 For to you it has been granted for Christ’s sake, not only to believe in Him, but also to suffer for His sake;

Most of the time we respond badly to suffering; especially when it’s for something we don’t feel we deserve.

Self-inflicted wounds of anger, bitterness, revenge and self-pity can be more destructive than death itself.

James 1:12 (NASB)

12 Blessed is a man who perseveres under trial;

__________

1 Peter 3:8-22 – The promise of God is that if we respond rightly to them, His “blessing” will ultimately come to our lives.

Three ways to respond rightly to suffering:

1) REAFFIRM our spiritual CALLING

1 Peter 3:8 (NASB)

8 To sum up (“Finally”-NIV&KJ), all of you be harmonious, sympathetic, brotherly (“loving’-NIV), kindhearted (“compassionate”-NIV), and humble in spirit;

The “blessings of life” are maximized when believers cultivate spiritual qualities in their relationships.

Translation:

sumpathes = suffer together with. Where we get the word “sympathetic”.

We need each other to get through this life.

1 Peter 3:9 (NASB)

9 …not returning evil for evil or insult for insult, but giving a blessing instead;

Luke 6:28 (NASB)

28 …bless those who curse you;

1 Peter 3:9 (NASB)

9 …for you were called for the very purpose;

OUR CALLING: We’re to Pay back an INSULT with a “BLESSING

1 Peter 2:9 (NASB)

9 …called out of darkness into His marvelous light.

We have to trust He has a good purpose for our suffering and pain; especially when we can’t see any human possibility that good will come of it.

“When a train goes through a tunnel and it gets dark, you don’t throw away the ticket and jump off. You sit still and trust the engineer.” (Dick Kauffman)

1 Peter 2:9 (NASB)

9 …so that you might inherit a blessing.

When we respond rightly, we’re the ones who get the “blessing” of our “inheritance” right now as:
– harmony
– sympathy
– brotherly love
– kindheartedness and
– humility are experienced in our relationships.

__________

2) REMEMBER the Scriptural DIRECTIVES

1 Peter 3:10-11 (NASB)

10 For, “THE ONE WHO DESIRES LIFE, TO LOVE AND SEE GOOD DAYS”,
MUST KEEP HIS TONGUE FROM EVIL AND HIS LIPS FROM SPEAKING DECEIT.
11 “HE MUST TURN AWAY FROM EVIL AND DO GOOD; HE MUST SEEK PEACE AND PURSUE IT.

What’s THE “BLESSING” we’ll get? Peter calls it “THE GOOD LIFE.”

1 Peter 3:10 (NASB)

10 KEEP HIS TONGUE FROM EVIL AND HIS LIPS FROM SPEAKING DECEIT.

Ephesians 4:29 (NASB)

29 Let no unwholesome word proceed from your mouth, but only such a word as is good for edification according to the need of the moment, so that it will give grace to those who hear.

1 Peter 3:11 (NASB)

11 HE MUST TURN AWAY FROM EVIL AND DO GOOD;

Translation:

ekklino = “turn away” pictures an intense “swerving” or “bending” to avoid something that’s “evil.”

We’re to go out of our way to help and serve and care for those who hate and hurt us.

1 Peter 3:11 (NASB)

11 …must seek peace and pursue it.

Romans 12:18 (NASB)

18 If possible, so far as it depends on you, be at peace with all men.

Matthew 5:8 (NASB)

8 Blessed are the peacemakers.

1 Peter 3:12 (NASB)

12 FOR THE EYES OF THE LORD ARE TOWARD THE RIGHTEOUS, AND HIS EARS ATTEND TO THEIR PRAYER;

Even if everyone is against us, the Lord God Almighty is “on our side.”

1 Peter 3:12 (NASB)

12 BUT THE FACE OF THE LORD IS AGAINST THOSE WHO DO EVIL.”
One day He will repay them in perfect justice.

Keep following the Scriptural directives and doing the right things when suffering!

1 Peter 3:13 (NASB)

13 Who is there to harm you if you prove zealous for (“are eager to do”-NIV) what is good?

1 Peter 3:14 (NASB)

14 DO NOT FEAR THEIR INTIMIDATION, AND DO NOT BE TROUBLED;

God will deal in His time and in His way with the person that has hurt you! You don’t have to hurt them back!

__________

3) SUBMIT to our Savior’s LORDSHIP

1 Peter 3:15 (NASB)

15 sanctify Christ as Lord in your hearts;

Suffering will be much more endurable when we know it’s occurring because we did what our Lord told us to do.

“You don’t really know Jesus is all you need until Jesus is all you have.” (Pastor Tim Keller)

1 Peter 3:15 (NASB)

15 always being ready to make a defense (“give an answer”-NIV) to everyone who asks you to give an account (“a reason”-NIV) for the hope that is in you, yet with gentleness and reverence;

What gives you so much hope that the future will be better than today?
Answer: Jesus of Nazareth has changed my life. He died, was buried and rose again to forgive my sins; He assures me that one day, I’m going to heaven and be with Him.

Submitting to His Lordship will impact even your enemies.

1 Peter 3:16 (NASB)

16 and keep a good conscience so that in the thing in which you are slandered, those who revile (“speak maliciously”-NIV) your good behavior in Christ will be put to shame.

1 Peter 3:17 (NASB)

17 For it is better, if God should will it so, that you suffer for doing what is right (“good”-NIV) rather than for doing what is wrong.

OUR ASSURANCE: is what JESUS’ EXPERIENCE

1 Peter 3:18 (NASB)

18 For Christ also died for sins once for all, the just for the unjust, so that He might bring us to God, having been put to death in the flesh, but made alive in the spirit;

Translation:

prosago = “bring” is a technical term used for gaining access or an audience with a king.

1 Peter 3:19-20 (NASB)

19 …in which also He went and made proclamation to the spirits now in prison,
20 who once (“long ago”-NIV) were disobedient, when the patience of God kept waiting in the days of Noah, during the construction of the ark, in which a few, that is, eight persons, were brought safely through the water.

God offered a pathway through the suffering of the flood via “the ark.” He waited patiently for people to repent as Noah built it.

1 Peter 3:21 (NASB)

21 Corresponding to that, baptism now saves you;

Peter wasn’t saying “Getting dunked under water earns anybody salvation from sin.

1 Peter 3:21 (NASB)

21 — not the removal of dirt from the flesh (“body”-NIV), but an appeal (“pledge”-NIV) to God for a good conscience — through the resurrection of Jesus Christ,…

When we’re baptised in water, we demonstrate outwardly what we experienced inwardly—our identification with Jesus’ death, burial and “resurrection” that removed our guilt and cleansed our “conscience.”

1 Peter 3:22 (NASB)

22 …is at the right hand of God, having gone into heaven, after angels and
authorities and powers had been subjected to Him.

__________

The Challenge: BLESSING will come to those who RESPOND RIGHTLY to unjust suffering.

“Sometimes you have to go to the pit and the prison to get to the palace.” (Dr. Dave Jeremiah)

Can you trust God to do that with your suffering?
