I read this and immediately hear in the back of my head “come Watson, the game is afoot”. This is a famous quote from Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes. The phrase is interesting in that it describes an active scheme happening at that very moment.
People love Christmas time because of the beautiful decorations, stories, sweets & Santa Clause. Less people connect with the birth of Christ story and even fewer read through the biblical passages surrounding the story of the birth of Jesus. The story is absolutely wrought with difficulty and now with the addition of the scripture passages above, treachery has entered the scene.
The game is afoot because king Herod has mind to eliminate any threats to his throne. That means Mary and Joseph now have to flee and go somewhere else to keep their baby safe. Can you imagine living through something like that? If you were Mary or Joseph and had just obeyed God thus far only to have a king threatening to kill your baby due to jealousy, how would you feel? I think I’d have some words with God… then I’d probably ask him what I should do next… then I’d do what he said. He’s kept them all alive this long. Might as well keep going.
